The Four Roxy’s of the Winter Wardrobe

The transition from summer to winter is a moment of reflection for many, including myself. As I pack away my summer dresses and pull out my winter clothes, the reality hits me: my winter wardrobe is far from ideal. It’s not just the contents of my closet that are on my mind, but also the changes happening to my body. Next month, I turn 40, and after years of stable weight, I’ve noticed that my body is changing. Finding that balance has become more challenging. But more on that later.

What bothers me is how uncomfortable I’m beginning to feel about my winter clothing. During the pandemic and our renovation on the Bloemstraat, I discovered how incredibly comfortable a tracksuit can be—something I didn’t grow up with, having a fashion designer as a father. And now, after a lot of thought and online inspiration, I’ve realised that there are four versions of myself, each with its own clothing needs. I’ve named them Sleeping Roxy, Home Body Roxy, Out and About Roxy, and, of course, Foxy Roxy.

Sleeping Roxy: Comfort Is Key

For years, I’ve slept in soft, cotton pyjamas from Khatso. Moving away from them is hard because they’re so comfortable. Being always cold, my arms, shoulders, and legs must be covered—any little draft of cold air can keep me awake. Over my pyjamas, I usually wear a sweater and warm socks or slippers. As for bathrobes? Not for me—they don’t feel right. Pyjamas must be roomy, comfortable, and made of cotton—I won’t compromise on that.

Home Body Roxy: Chic Comfort

I want to feel relaxed when I'm home, especially when working or cooking. This is where the jogger look comes in. I want to wear something that feels good, keeps me warm while I sit for long periods at my computer, and looks presentable for when my daughters’ friends come over or when Daniel is home. It has to be chic but without too much effort. I can even head to the supermarket without hesitation with a nice coat on top. This is probably the version of myself that spends the most time in winter.

Out and About Roxy: Functional and Stylish

I opt for practical yet stylish clothing when I have a busy day filled with appointments outside, often for interior design projects. High heels and short skirts? Not for those days—those are saved for special occasions. Out and About Roxy wears jeans, blouses, beautiful sweaters, and comfortable sneakers. Most importantly, a good coat is essential. My father would call it “Flaneer fashion,” he’s right. A stunning jacket completes any winter outfit and gives me the confidence to take on the world.

Foxy Roxy: Fashionista at Heart

Even though comfort has taken centre stage in recent years, I’m still a fashionista deep down. Foxy Roxy makes an appearance when I feel like dressing up. This is the Roxy who loves stylish wool sweaters, short skirts, high boots, and long coats. It may not always be practical, but it’s the version of myself that enjoys looking good, even if that means reaching for my favourite high heels. Foxy Roxy reminds me that, despite my newfound love for comfort, I still have a passion for fashion, and there’s nothing wrong with feeling fabulous occasionally.

All in Harmony: One Wardrobe for Four Roxy’s

Even though these four Roxy’s each have their own style and needs, I want to create a wardrobe that supports all of them. Everything has to mix and match in style and colour, so my closet feels like a boutique that reflects my taste. The clothes must be practical for different situations and form a cohesive whole that contributes to my identity.

In my ideal wardrobe, the comfy joggers of Home Body Roxy can be paired with a stylish Out and About Roxy coat, allowing me to seamlessly transition from home to the supermarket without sacrificing style. And when Foxy Roxy is ready to shine, the basics from the other versions can easily be upgraded with a pair of high boots or a stunning skirt. This way, everything remains flexible while staying true to my style.

I wish I could show you my entire new wardrobe right now. After weeks of thought and inspiration, I finally know where I want to go.
